Traditional Russian design for the metro station in Moscow

The station Novoperedelkino will be opened at the crossing of Borovskoye highway and Sholohova street. It will have two underground halls. The central decorations of the station are planned as columns resembling the Byzantian traditions in the Russian architecture acting as light boxes.

“Lightboxes decorated with the traditional Russian patterns will be the main design feature of the new Moscow metro station Novoperedelkino of the Kalininsko-Solntsevskaya line”, says the chief architect of Moscow Sergei Kuznetsov.

According to his words, the authors of the concept from Riga-based bureau United Riga Architects were involved into the development of the project along with the JSC Lenmetrogriprotrans specialists.

This kind of lighting will visually enlarge the underground hall space and will allow changing the colouring to create different mood patterns and to alter the image of the station.

The central decorations of the station are planned as columns resembling the Byzantian traditions in the Russian architecture acting as light boxes. The metal panels with the carved typical “Moscow” pattern will decorate the columns.

The reality modified the contest concept, since the metro is a complicated technological system and not everything is meant to be implemented here. But thanks to construction design supervision the initial idea was kept: the traditional Russian pattern transmitted to the advanced materials. The metro construction contests are supported by the Major of Moscow and holding these contests allows receiving unique designs for the new stations”, said Sergei Kuznetsov.

The flooring will be made of the light granite plates with the dark shadowed carbonate of magnesite. The walls of the halls, stairs and crossings will be decorated with the aluminum composite panels. The station is planned to be opened in 2018 according to the Committee for Architecture and Urban Development of Moscow.
