TBM launched in Saint Petersburg to extend the metro line with double-track metro tunnel
On 23 of January, 2014, the work on first in Russia double-track tunnel for underground metro began in Saint Petersburg. Now assembling of TBM S-782 has been completed.
This tunnel boring machine was manufactured by Herrenknecht for OAO “Metrostroy” for driving tunnels with a diameter of 10.3 m. There will be two tracks in one tunnel, constructed with such TBM, with trains running both ways.
The first double-track metro tunnel was designed for the section of so-called “Frunzensky radius”, an extension of existing “Frunzensko-Primorskaya” metro line and contains three stations: “Prospect Slavy”, “Dunayskiy prospect”, “Yuzhnaya”. Implementation of the first project like this in Russia became possible with a help of Saint Petersburg designers and builders. The technology common for many countries in the world is to be applied in Russia for the first time.
In 2013 “Metrostroy” workers accomplished site preparation, constructed more than 200 m of approach adit, constructed launch pit where the TBM’s elements were assembled. Two single-track 5.6 m tunnels were constructed from “Mezhdunarodnaya” station to “Prospect Slavy”, reception shaft was constructed also. 300 rings were produced.
After the start all systems of TBM will be tested, temporary rings installed, the TBM will start driving towards the station “Prospect Slavy”. The length of double-track tunnel is 3.7 km. The completion of its construction is scheduled for 2017.
