Tunnels instead of the bridges: Bangladesh thinks green
The People's Republic of Bangladesh's Government took into consideration the possibility to build tunnels instead of the bridges to preserve the environment.
‘We do not want to build bridges across the large rivers like Padma and Jamuna. The bridges disrupts the nature and provoke the water pollution and bottom deposits,’ said Muhammad Abdul Mannan, Minister of Planning.
At present, Bangladesh conducts the construction of the 3.4 km long tunnel under the river Karnaphuli. The construction work started in February 2019. The estimated cost of the project is about $1 billion. The tunnel under the river Jamuna is also planned. It will link the cities Kurigram and Jamalpur.
