Automated world metro lines - world report on metro automation, 2016

Automated metro lines are a proven solution for metro systems around the world.
As of July 2016, there are 55 fully automated metro lines in 37 cities around the world, operating in total 803 km, a 14,2% increase in km over 2014 figures.

In the 30 years since the implementation of the first automated metro lines, the growth rate for automated metro has doubled with each passing decade – an exponential growth that is set to quadruple in the coming decade. The projection is that by 2025 there will be over 2,300 km of automated metro lines in operation.

In the beginning of 1970-es in Leningrad the General Plan of underground space use was created by 20 leading design bureaus. It was a unique project,  long-term town-planning program of urban underground space use, allowing to implement the projects of improving and shaping urban area and improving of the quality of underground infrastructure for 20-25 years (until the year 2000).

The problem can be solved not only by applying traditional teaching methods of on-site and off-site training or distance course, but also with a creation of  extended studies system for technical training, offering  creative development of professional skills and knowledge.
Creation of special educational centers within self-regulatory associations sounds the more rational decision then others, with its further accreditation from state authorities and cooperation of self-regulatory organizations with Higher Educational Institutions.

The article describes practical approach to issues of rehabilitation of structures of different purposes.  Most professionals involved into research work on behavior of structures, consider separate reasons that effect operational lifetime. Meanwhile only total-system approach, based on research work on wearing and repair of structures, allows obtaining required solution for safety and durability.

With rapid urbanization being the main force for many countries development, management of urbanized districts development becomes a primary challenge for the authorities at all levels, local or national.

Recently some additional schemes related to underground space use should be added to the General Plan of Saint Petersburg.

Besides common principles of horizontal zoning it is important to take into consideration its vertical zoning as well. «Vertical zoning» should be, first of all, based on natural and technology-related geological conditions.

Steel sheet-pile wall was planned for construction at first.  But it proved itself not sufficient for securing excavation wall stiffness. It was planned to construct additionally horizontal diaphragm wall at the depth of 12-14 m with jet-grouting method to provide sheet-pile wall stiffness. Even in this case analysis proved that settlements could be dangerous for the buildings nearby.  Thus it was suggested to construct outside the sheet-pile wall a vertical reinforced concrete-soil diaphragm wall with jet-grouting method with a length of 18 m and width of 1 m app. Then previously constructed steel sheet-pile wall and concrete-soil wall were to be joined together with a single reinforced concrete beam.

The article describes pipeline diagnostics. While operating engineering systems of different purpose their diagnostics requires a lot of attention, for example their intactness and encrustation of pipes with loads and rust, that lead to standard operation time reduction. Diagnosis of any negative effects at early stages and their effective correction could be provided by different modifications of Piglet system.
